KFPL is looking for five poets interested in an hour-long one-on-one online mentorship session this spring with Poet Laureate Jason Heroux.

If you're an emerging or practising poet aged 14 or older you may apply for one of the five online mentorship sessions.  Please submit a sample of your poetry (from five to 12 pages in length) to poetlaureate@cityofkingston.ca.  Don't forget to include your full name and your contact information with your submission.  To be eligible, your submission must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 9.  (Those without an email address may submit their verse as a print-out or typescript at any branch of Kingston Frontenac Public Library, marked to the attention of Poet Laureate Jason Heroux, c/o Isabel Turner Branch.  Because of the latest provincial COVID-19 restrictions, please phone Anne Hall at (613) 549-8888 x 3528 if you are dropping off a paper submission.)

Please note that the five mentorship sessions will take place at the following times:

  • Thursday, April 29 at 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 1 at 2 p.m.
  • Tuesday, May 4 at 7 p.m.
  • Thursday, May 6 at 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 8 at 2 p.m.

This interactive online program will be held on Zoom. Registrants will be sent the link at least one hour prior to the start time. Participants will need to download the Zoom software in advance to whichever device they’ll be using during the mentorship session.

When sending in your poetry, please be sure to list which of these five sessions you'd be able to attend, ranked in order of your preference.  Jason will review all the submissions and will schedule one-on-one meetings with five poets. During your hour he will go over your work and offer both feedback and possible next steps.

KFPL acknowledges the support of the City of Kingston through the Poet Laureate program, increasing the profile of the literary arts within the City and beyond.
