Join KFPL and the Kingston’s Neighbourhood Climate Action Champions and for an interactive exploration of the fascinating black walnut tree and its role in our ecosystem.
This year's theme for Kingston's National Tree Day celebration is the Black Walnut, our neighbour who provides tremendous ecological value. Black Walnut trees support biodiversity by serving as host plants for more than 100 species of butterflies and moths, including the beautiful Luna moth. We will discuss how these trees contribute to healthy wildlife populations and why native tree species are so important to local ecosystems.
Guest Speakers: Little Forrests Kingston and Portsmouth Urban Forager
The presentation will explore the many human uses of black walnuts, from their nutritious edible nuts to the natural dyes and tannins derived from their husks. Participants will have the opportunity to shell and sample black walnuts during the program.
To help make this unique food resource more accessible to the community, specialized black walnut nutcrackers will be added to the library's lending collection, allowing patrons to borrow them just like books.
Discover how one remarkable tree connects biodiversity, food and forests.
