Bokashi is an indoor, closed-system composting method which starts the process of decomposing things which would otherwise be harmful in an outdoor aerobic compost pile, like meats, dairy and fats.

Join Astrid Muschalla from the Rideau 1000 Islands Master Gardeners as she explains how Indoor Bokashi Composting uses either a home-made or commercially-available inoculant to ferment kitchen waste, using beneficial microbes which flourish in anaerobic, acidic environments. The process converts kitchen scraps, including meat and bones, into a soil building “pre-compost” and a nutrient-rich tea.

Kitchen wastes and a handful of inoculant are sealed inside a tightly-covered container for 10-12 days, during which a leachate must be drained off every other day.  Then the container is unsealed and the now-pickled contents, or “pre-compost”, are buried outside or added to either a traditional aerobic compost pile or to a vermicomposter.  After a further couple of weeks in the soil or composter this product can then be applied to your garden.

Unlike natural forms of anaerobic composting, Bokashi produces a less smelly product, and one which can be applied to plants sooner than traditional compost.  Great for small spaces, it can allow composting all year round.  Another benefit is that less carbon is converted to carbon dioxide and so more available carbon is recycled into the ecosystem with a greater chance of converting into humus. The nutrients are also not as water soluble and therefore less prone to leaching away with watering –- and so more for your plants!

This 90-minute interactive online presentation will be held on Zoom.  Registrants will be emailed the link immediately upon registration. (Please check your Junk and Spam folders right away if you don't see the confirmation email and link in your Inbox, then adjust your settings to make sure emails from KFPL aren't blocked. You can also manage your registrations by scrolling over the calendar icon at the top of the main page of our website and signing in to My Events.)

Participants will need to download the latest version of Zoom in advance to the device they’ll be using during the presentation.
